A quarter century later, the tragedy of that day remains—made sharper by the divisions and rising acts of hate we witness today.

The American Human Rights Council (AHRC‑USA) joins the nation in commemorating the 25th anniversary of the horrific September 11 terrorist attacks. We honor the victims, support the families, and reflect on the lasting impact that day continues to have on our country and the world.

This year’s commemoration arrives amid a troubling resurgence of the weaponization of the tragedy against the Muslim community for political expediency. Hostility targeting people of Muslim faith has accelerated, becoming more open, blunter, and more widely tolerated across political and social spheres. Racism and bigotry in all forms have resurfaced with alarming force, threatening the shared values that bind us as a nation.

The toxic rhetoric and increasingly polluted political climate are fueling and normalizing hate. Today’s acts of hostility against Muslims show signs of a systematic effort to make such behavior acceptable. These trends mirror broader patterns of racism harming communities nationwide and undermining trust, safety, and equal dignity.

This surge in hate is not abstract; it shapes public discourse and influences elections. The attacks surrounding the U.S. Senate race in Michigan, including those directed at Dr. Abdul El‑Sayed, show clearly that today’s hostility is about a name, a faith, or an origin. It reflects a climate where hate is being normalized and used as a political tool. It is immoral.

Twenty-five years later, the danger is no longer only the hate we remember; it is the hate being encouraged today and leveraged for partisan and electoral advantage. Our duty remains to stand firmly for dignity, fairness, and for leaders who prioritize the people’s interests, period.

Those who lived through the post‑9/11 era recall the immense challenges communities and the nation faced. Many believed we would never again witness a worse wave of backlash against Muslim Americans. Today, that belief has been painfully disproven. In 2001, hate surged in the shock of tragedy; today, it is being fueled and normalized in a divided nation. It is seen as a political tool, and it is fair to use it.

“United WE Stand” once defined our national spirit. United, we stood firm—government and people together—against terror and against hate in all its forms. United, we set a clear tone: any act of hate, regardless of faith, nationality, origin, or race, would not be tolerated.

President George W Bush is blamed for the foreign wars. To his credit, George W Bush, after the 9/11 attack, visited a mosque and made it clear that the issue is not Islam and that American Muslims are citizens and the country should be united to fight terrorism. Many American Muslims joined the effort to defend the country, serving in different capacities.

That unity helped the nation heal and move forward, and the effort of all Americans made the country safer. The partnership between government and communities, including the Arab and Muslim communities, was essential in containing hate and reaffirming our shared responsibility to protect safety, dignity, and mutual respect. And helping to make the country safer.

Twenty‑five years later, AHRC renews its commitment to confronting hate, violence, and all forms of terror. We owe it to the victims of September 11 to close the widening gaps of division and uphold America’s core values—freedom, justice, liberty, and prosperity for all. Tragedies are not political opportunities for division and electoral advantage that damage the fabric of the nation.

“I have been involved in advocacy for decades, and I remember the 9/11 attacks and the shock of the nation at the time,” said Imad Hamad, AHRC Executive Director. “There was a level of political maturity and responsibility that we saw from our leaders at the time,” added Hamad. “Political expediency and partisan advantage should not be put before the country and its democratic values and the safety and wellbeing of all its communities,” concluded Hamad.

Twenty‑five years after the tragic events of September 11, our nation pauses to remember the lives lost, the families forever changed, and the profound shock that reshaped America.
